What it actually decides for you

  • Where should I stop? Camps, fuel, water, groceries, and service points in route order — not scattered pins.
  • Can I drive and camp there? Land access, surface conditions, closures, and signal risk before you commit.
  • What happens when coverage drops? Route context and saved spots stay available when the signal disappears.

The trip-planning tax

You shouldn't need six tabs open to leave the driveway.

One app for boondocking. Another for dump stations. A third for routing. Weather over here. Wildfire smoke buried in a government site. Every one of them stacking another $9.99/month.

RoamFree fuses the data layers you actually use — into one map you actually own.

Why this exists

Built on a honeymoon. Sharpened by a wildfire.

My wife and I spent four months on the road for our honeymoon — and it was one of the best decisions we've ever made. It was also one of the most chaotic planning experiences imaginable. Five or six apps deep, juggling tabs, trying to correlate data points in our heads to make decisions on the fly.

Then on our second extended trip, wildfires. We'd dodge one smoke trail and drive straight into another. There was no single place to see route conditions, smoke coverage, and campground availability all at once — so we kept getting caught off guard.

I came home and started building what I wish had existed.

No team, no VC funding — just a love of road trips and too much time spent in a code editor. RoamFree is the app I needed, and you can use it today.
What's inside

Everything you'd open another app for. Already here.

Stack data layers like you'd stack on a paper map — toggle the ones that matter, hide the rest, plan smarter.

Discover places worth stopping

Boondocking spots, public lands, dispersed camping, scenic overlooks — filterable by access, surface, and rig size.

Build routes that fit your rig

Turn-by-turn routing that knows your vehicle — height, weight, AWD, off-road clearance. No more surprise low bridges.

Weather & wildfire smoke, live

Open-Meteo forecasts overlaid on your route. Plus active wildfire perimeters and smoke plume coverage from federal feeds.

Save the good spots

Drop a pin, add photos, log access notes. Your private journal of every gravel road and lake cove you've earned.

Your garage

Profile your rig — Sprinter, Tacoma, F-150, Subaru. Routing and recommendations adapt to what you're actually driving.

Trip budget tracking

Log fuel, food, campsite fees. See your daily burn. Helpful for the "how long can we really stay out?" conversation.

Common questions

The honest answers

RoamFree is a personal project — one person, no investors, no team. Right now I'm covering the hosting costs myself because the user base is small. If RoamFree grows enough that infrastructure costs become a real expense, I'll need to find a way to keep things sustainable — but you'll hear about any change here first, never as a surprise paywall buried in an app update.
The web app is live at roamfreeapp.com and works on any browser, including mobile. Native iOS and Android builds are in preview — join early access and you'll be among the first invited when they're ready.
Saved routes and your saved spots are cached locally on the mobile app. Live map tiles, weather, and smoke layers require a connection. Offline-first map regions are on the roadmap.
RoamFree is built on open data — OpenStreetMap for the base map, Open-Meteo for weather, Valhalla for routing, and federal feeds for wildfire activity. POIs are curated and community-vetted. No corporate gatekeepers.
Email ken.nunez@nolimittechnical.com directly, or use "Report a Bug" inside the app. You'll usually get a real reply from the person who built it.
